Former Tuscumbia, AL cop James Steward charged for reckless murder while he was drunk and on drugs on duty

James “Jay” Keith Steward, 34, a former officer for the Tuscumbia Police Department, was arrested on Friday after a Colbert County grand jury indicted him for reckless murder in connection to the October 2022 pedestrian vs. vehicle incident that killed 60-year-old Terry Hinton.

Officer Steward of the Tuscumbia PD in Alabama was severely intoxicated, driving head-on on the wrong side of the road while both under the influence of alcohol and drugs when he hit and killed 69-year-old pedestrian Terry Hinton.  Steward was sent to surgery for his own injuries in this DUI crash on duty and then booked and released, currently awaiting trial. He pleaded not guilty.

The trial is set to begin on February 12, 2024.
