Linked below is a list of all persons killed by US Marshals in 2023. US Marshals,created in 1789 as an enforcement arm of the federal court system, are the oldest tactical federal agency in the US still in existence today. This system created under George Washington was developed in 1969 into the highly militarized tactical system we know as US Marshals today.
Until 1850, US Marshals were tasked with finding and returning runaway slaves. Their role as slave catchers ended with the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. Glorified by media, US Marshals Virgil and Wyatt Earp continue to be heroes of a bygone Hollywood era. US Marshals brutally suppressed labor strikes, policed “Indian Territories” and enforced alcohol Prohibition with the same fervor they dedicate to drug busts to this day.
US Marshals always have and continue to play a pivotal role in the Witness Protection Program. They transport federal prisoners and “aliens” and in 2006, they SOIB Branch of US Marshals was formed, the Sex Offenders Investigations Branch that aids in the arrest of child sex predators. While our research work is limited to the fatalities this agency produces, their tasks such as the Witness Protection Program is something we do not encounter directly. We do research the fatalities produced in such encounters and as one can easily see from the linked list below, the majority of cases when Marshals kill are in the categories of drug arrests and child sexual abuse crime busts, two very different types of issues, both handled by US Marshals as enforcers of federal arrest warrants for both.
We strongly believe there are more cases than those we found below that are not clearly identified as being led by US Marshals and are often listen as having been killed by County SWAT where US Marshals commonly partner with Sheriff’s Offices and their SWAT teams in multi-agency militarized home invasions and busts. US Marshals typically enlist local law enforcement and their infrastructure in arrests, so almost all US Marshals-caused fatalities also involve the local County Sheriff’s Office and their SWAT team and other agencies to assist the Marshals in militarized home invasions.
The majority of cases we are finding on our daily count of bodybags filled by law enforcement are conflicts between local PD and Sheriff’s Offices against civilians. When US Marshals become involved, there is a federal search and arrest warrant present to warrant the involvement of U.S. Marshals and they consistently seem to be arrests of larger drug dealers. Somehow, large drug dealers such as San Jose cop union capo Joanne Segovia who was found to wholesale-import fentanyl and other street drugs from numerous countries and distribute among all lower 48 states are spared. While numerous law enforcement officers and even their top leadership have been caught trafficking in large amounts of drugs, we are unable to find a single case of them having been attacked in a militarized raid and killed in their homes like the many other cases on this list.
US Marshals are commonly involved in fatal arrest and search warrant raids on people involved in narcotics trafficking, also search + arrest warrants for people trafficking in pedophilia. Below are all fatalities caused by US Marshals in 2023 and these 2 patterns are very visible.
It is extremely difficult, currently virtually impossible, to get any more information on fatal encounters between US Marshals and community members. US Marshals do not release bodycam footage, almost never disclose the names of their shooter agents/officers and answer no questions. They come, kill, and leave without explanation.
Below are all cases for 2023 so far of people who died at the hands of US Marshals. The information is fairly scant. Names, identities and narratives are withheld as are names of involved agents. Should anyone find contributory detail about any of the cases, send it to us. We are always looking to fill in missing information and researching especially feds when they kill is a nightmare. The same problem exists within the FBI and the lethal Border Patrol agency CBP that has been active throughout the US, not just in border states. While transparency and accountability is a huge problem throughout all law enforcement agencies, all federal agencies are by far the least transparent of them all, at least on a consistent basis.
