unarmed Eric Harris during an undercover sting. The officer allegedly confused his gun for a taser and said “Oh, I shot him! I’m sorry.” Another officer, deputy Joseph Byars, was recorded standing over the dying Harris who complained he could not breathe and said: “Fuck your breath.”
Deputy Robert Charles Bates was sentenced to 4 years for the manslaughter of Eric Harris. The officer was released from prison in 2017 at age 76, only 1 ½ years after being sentenced.
