Gunshot: 504
Vehicle: 160 (police chase crashes, bystanders, pedestrians hit by police cars, etc.)
All others aside from shootings and police chase crash fatalities can be found under categories taser, drowning (during police chase), fire (SWAT raids), etc.
This database also lists fatalities in jails but does not include them in the counts. The reason for this is that it is currently impossible due to lack of government reporting to count in-custody fatalities. The last published government report was in 2022 and counted deaths in custody in jails and detention centers at around 1,500 annually with an additional 3,000 in prisons and penitentiaries. Only a few percent of these cases are reported in the media. To prevent misleading numbers, we do categorically exclude deaths in custody but post all we are able to find in the database as currently, there is no tracking of these deaths by any government or private website and we believe even the fragmentary information that is available is worth posting.
Mot newer cases appear as a very basic summary without a name, photo or real narrative. We regularly update content and add this as it becomes available, so please bookmark and check back for updates on individual cases.
