Vallejo PD alleges that on November 22, 2023, Zion Israel Smith, 18, robbed a man on the street and Corporal Matthew Komoda initiated a chase, causing the second teenager who was driving to crash into another vehicle. A passenger suffered a head injury. Smith ran on foot with Cpl. Komoda after him. Komoda fired at his back twice, alleges the teenager pointed a gun. The city allowed viewing of the bodycam video but strenuously refused to release it and even obtained a protective order to prevent release. Vallejo Sun media viewed the video in the courtroom and state that it contradicts the officer’s statements.

Smith was heavily criminalized and is in court now while Cpl. Komoda once again kept his gun and badge and remains on the streets of Vallejo.
