Officer Brad Lunsford was charged and arrested for involuntary manslaughter for the 2022 death of Nigerian immigrant Presley Eze in an incident that started over an allegedly stolen beer.
On October 3, 2023: Attorney General of New Mexico charges Officer Brad Lunsford who turns himself in to the Dona Ana County Jail after being charged with manslaughter and an additional count of firearm enhancement. He was released on his own recognizance after the State’s Attorney declared the shooting “unjustifiable use of force” and “yet another example of poor police tactics.” He remains on paid administrative leave.
Officer Brad Lunsford fires a shot into Eze’s head at close range
August 2, 2022: Nigerian immigrant Presley Eze, 26, left a convenience store allegedly with “a beer he did not pay for.” Police were called and Officer Lunsford arrived.
Lunsford pulled him from a vehicle and started a fight in which he and another officer forcibly tried to arrest him. Eze touched one of the officer’s taser but it was not felt this was purposeful but a motion during the scuffle.
An officer lost his taser and Eze’s flailing hand accidentally touched it by all accounts.
Later claiming that Ese had “reached for the officer’s taser,” Lunsford shot Eze in his back and left side of his head point blank, deliberately executing him. Eze had been unarmed. A small folded pocket knife was found in his pocket and not felt to have played any role in the fatal events.
Eze had been 37 years old, the father of a toddler and a nursing supervisor at a nursing facility for the elderly, a churchgoer and considered an overall positive person.
All this for a dispute over one beer.
PRIOR MISCONDUCT RECORD:
Officer Lunsford had a civil lawsuit in 2020 for battery during arrest at Walmart. He also has disciplinary records for excessive force on his record.
FAMILY STATEMENT:
“The officers introduced violence at every level. The family of Presley Eze trusts in the justice system and trusts that the death of Presley Eze will reveal once again that this country must reconcile its past use of slave patrols to terrorize Black bodies with the modern police use of deadly force to kill defenseless Black men.”
