When City Council voted in the How Many Stops Act, Adams sided with NYPD and police unions and vetoed the effort at accountability. Adams declared that they already use bodycams and that should be enoughwithout warranting writing police reports on Level One stops.
Level One Stops are police fishing expeditions used in profiling which allow an officer to walk up to anyone without reason to stop them and ask any questions about name, destination, whatever they are carrying without even making a police report. Due to the high number of abusive police stops, City Council voted in the How Many Stops Act which demanded reporting and accountability for each police stop. NYPD can currently walk up to anyone and demand answers such as “Why are you parked here?” and while the person has the right to refuse to answer, driving away may end in a dangerous police chase legally. In 2019, Antonio Williamsand his brother tried to walk away from such an unjustified Level One Stop and were hunted down and both beaten to death by NYPD.
The Adams administration tried to solve the City Council meetings about the fighting over the bill and the mayor’s veto by bringing in the goons and ordering city and state employees and a handful of reporters to get up out of their chairs and denying them a place to sit.
The fight continues. As to the diligent NYC city and state workers fighting this fight – bring your own chairs and keep fighting the good fight even if the mayor confiscates your chairs. Bring your own chairs. This model is tried and proven:
