OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/12/2022, Wake County Sheriff’s Deputy Ned Byrd was shot and killed while responding to a call on Auburn Knightdale Road near Battle Bridge Road in eastern Wake County. Deputies later determined Byrd had been shot four times while outside of his patrol vehicle. He did not radio for assistance. Other deputies located him after being dispatched to check on his welfare. Arturo Sotelo and Alder Sotelo were later charged in connection with the shooting and both pleaded not guilty.
