OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On December 3, 2022, 23-year-old Deputy Austin Walsh was shot and killed by fellow Brevard County Deputy Andrew Lawson in Palm Bay. The two deputies were taking a break at Lawson’s home when Lawson, believing his gun was unloaded, pointed it and pulled the trigger. Walsh was struck once and died at the scene. Lawson called 911 and cooperated with investigators. He was later charged with manslaughter. Sheriff Wayne Ivey publicly described the shooting as accidental but said it resulted from reckless behavior with a firearm.
