On 02/22/2025, Andrew William Duarte, a 30-year-old patrolman with the West York Borough Police Department in Pennsylvania, was killed in the line of duty during a shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York. Duarte and other officers responded to a report of a gunman who had taken hospital staff hostage in the intensive care unit. During the tactical engagement, Duarte was struck by gunfire and later died from his wounds after being transported for treatment. Duarte had previously served with the Denver Police Department before joining West York Borough in 2022 and was recognized for his law enforcement service.
