Newcomb, a 70-year-old retired lieutenant of the New York City Police Department, died in Rocky Point, New York from cholangiocarcinoma, a rare form of cancer that developed following his assignment to search and recovery work at the World Trade Center site after the September 11, 2001 attacks. Newcomb had served with the NYPD, including in narcotics and as a lieutenant before retiring, and was recognized by law enforcement memorials for his service and role as a first responder.
