On 03/21/2024, retired NYPD Officer Joseph M. Stillitano died in Center Moriches, New York after a long battle with cancer attributed to his rescue and recovery work at the World Trade Center following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Stillitano retired from the NYPD in 2002 and later developed esophageal cancer which spread to his lungs and other organs, leading to his death at age 62. Funeral services were held in March 2024.
