On 06/06/2022, Supervising Fire Marshal John Joseph “Jack” Macauley of the New York City Fire Department Bureau of Fire Investigation died from cancer attributed to his rescue and recovery work at the World Trade Center following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Macauley participated in extended operations at Ground Zero where responders were exposed to toxic dust and debris. His death was officially recognized as job related and connected to 9/11 exposure.
