Riffe Jr. died after an extended hospitalization from COVID-19 that line-of-duty memorial sources say he contracted through presumed on-duty exposure. He served seven years with the Jefferson College Police Department and had previously served more than 30 years with the United States Army Criminal Investigation Division. State and memorial records list him as 59 years old.
