On 10/31/2021, Lakewood Police Captain Joseph William Goertz died from complications of COVID-19 after contracting the virus in the line of duty. He had served with the Lakewood Police Department since 1998, rising through the ranks from patrol officer to sergeant, lieutenant, and captain, eventually serving in both patrol command and administrative roles. Before his law enforcement career, he was a professional bowler and remained well known in the local community. He died at age 60 at his home in Whiting. He is survived by his wife and four children.
