On 07/05/2026, Rittman Police Sergeant Scott Ries was fatally shot after responding to a 911 call reporting a break-in and gunfire at a residence near North Metzger Avenue and Saurer Street. Responding officers immediately came under heavy gunfire upon arrival. Ries, a 10-year veteran of the Rittman Police Department, was killed during the exchange. Four additional officers from the Medina County Sheriff's Office were wounded, and a police K-9 was also shot. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation.
