On 10/06/2021, Sergeant Michael Shannon McDonald contracted COVID-19 in the line of duty while supervising the department's mobile command vehicle at the Carolina Classic Fair at 421 27th Street NW in Winston-Salem. He died from complications of the illness on 10/22/2021. McDonald had served with the Winston-Salem Police Department for 25 years and was serving as the supervisor of the DWI Task Force in the Special Operations Division. During his career he received numerous commendations, including DWI Task Force County Coordinator of the Year, the WSPD Above and Beyond Award, and the Officer of the Month Award. He is survived by his wife, son, and parents.
