OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 09/12/2021, Deputy Sheriff Joshua Joseph Welge contracted COVID-19 in the line of duty while serving with the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office. He died from complications of the illness on 10/21/2021. Welge joined the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office in 1999 as a corrections deputy before becoming law enforcement certified. He served with the Venice Police Department from 2001 to 2007 before returning to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, where he served for an additional 16 years, completing 22 years in law enforcement. He is survived by his wife and three children.
