On 10/14/2021, Trooper Theodore Lawrence Benda was deploying stop sticks during a pursuit on Interstate 80 near the 42-mile marker outside Avoca when he was struck by a passing vehicle. The pursuit had been initiated after a traffic stop for speeding. Benda was transported to Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, where he died from his injuries on 10/20/2021. He had served with the Iowa State Patrol for 15 years and was assigned to District 3. Benda is survived by his wife and four children. (odmp.org)
