OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 10/17/2021, Police Officer Ryan Andrew Hayworth was investigating a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 540 near Mile Marker 22 with his field training officer when their parked patrol vehicle was struck from behind by an impaired driver who failed to move over or slow down. Hayworth suffered fatal injuries in the collision. His field training officer, the driver from the original crash, and the impaired driver were seriously injured. In 2022, the driver who struck the patrol vehicle was charged with second-degree murder. Hayworth was a United States Army National Guard veteran and had served with the Knightdale Police Department for three months. He is survived by his father, mother, brother, and two stepbrothers. His father is retired Zebulon Police Chief Tim Hayworth.
