On 09/16/2021, Detective Rodney Lane Mooneyham contracted COVID-19 in the line of duty while serving with the Denton Police Department. He died from complications of the illness on 10/16/2021. Mooneyham was a United States Army veteran. He had served with the Denton Police Department for almost 11 years after previously serving with the Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office, the Kaufman County Sheriff's Office, and the Dallas Area Rapid Transit Police Department. During his tenure with the Denton Police Department, he served in General Investigations before transferring to the Major Crimes Unit in 2019, where he led numerous homicide investigations and received nine departmental commendations, including a Chief's Commendation. He is survived by his wife and two children.
