Event : Off-duty police officer killed in shooting outside after-hours lounge

OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/16/2026, 29-year-old Philadelphia Police Officer Alhassane Barry was fatally shot while off duty outside an after-hours lounge in Southwest Philadelphia. Another man, 35, was also shot and critically wounded.

Shortly before 4 a.m., Philadelphia police received a report of a shooting on the 7200 block of Elmwood Avenue. Responding officers found Barry and the second man suffering from gunshot wounds. Barry had been shot multiple times.

Both men were transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and underwent surgery. Barry died from his injuries later that morning. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that he was pronounced dead shortly before 8 a.m. The second man remained hospitalized.

Barry was assigned to Philadelphia's 12th Police District. Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel joined Barry's family and fellow officers at the hospital after the shooting. Barry's body was later escorted from the hospital by fellow officers.

Investigators had not publicly established what precipitated the shooting. As of the latest reporting, police were still searching for the person who shot Barry, and no arrest had been announced.

Funeral arrangements were made quickly. A viewing and prayer service for Barry were scheduled for Monday, August 17, in Philadelphia.
