On 03/02/2022, 43-year-old Santa Fe Police Officer Robert Eric Duran of Rio Rancho was killed in a multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 25 near mile marker 286 while participating in a Santa Fe Police Department pursuit in Santa Fe County, New Mexico. Uninvolved motorist Frank Lovato, 62, was also killed.

At 11:06 a.m., Santa Fe's Regional Emergency Dispatch Center received a report of a kidnapping in progress at the Rancho Vizcaya Apartments. The report alleged that an armed man was taking a woman in a vehicle. Santa Fe police located the white Chevrolet Malibu near Sawmill Road and St. Francis Drive at approximately 11:14 a.m. and attempted to stop it. The driver continued away and officers pursued the vehicle.

The pursuit entered Interstate 25. The Malibu ultimately traveled southbound in the northbound lanes of I-25, directly against oncoming traffic. Santa Fe police officers continued pursuing the vehicle.

Near mile marker 286, just north of Old Pecos Trail, the pursuit culminated in a multi-vehicle collision involving the fleeing Chevrolet Malibu, two Santa Fe Police Department patrol vehicles, Lovato's pickup truck and another uninvolved civilian vehicle.

Duran had joined the Santa Fe Police Department in January 2015 and served in the Patrol Section and on the department's Emergency Response Team. He was married and had two teenage sons.
