Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office received a call about an alleged burglary around 10:50 p.m. at a home on Old Middleburg Road. Deputies claim that a man ambushed them, firing multiple rounds and hitting one of the officers in the back and that one of the officers shot back but was unsure if the man had been hit. JSO claims that the man drove away from the home he was trying to rob in the car he found on premises and then fired again at the officers.
Jacksonville deputies hunted him until he crashed into a median on the Dames Point Bridge, got out of the car and jumped into the river, where he was seen swimming for a bit before going under. It is believed that police did not enter the water to try to save him.
The officer who was shot was taken to the hospital for evaluation but had been wearing body armor and was merely bruised under it. No BWC appears to have been released for verification of the police narrative.
