Aman called 911, reporting that he had been shot and was going to commit suicide. Police determined that the caller was in a vehicle and traveling somewhere near N.C. Highway 70 SW and U.S. Highway 321 SW. While officers were responding to the area, Hickory police learned the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office was responding to the area of Startown Road in reference to a shooting that was possibly related to the same man. Police escalated a chase of the vehicle that ended when the man committed suicide under police duress. Police did not publicly identify him.
