Open Records Summary :

Atlanta PD received a call about a man damaging pumps at a BP gas station. They arrived, encountered Dorado and described him as being intoxicated and responding to arrest attempts violently. Police fired tasers and he responded by grabbing a police radio and throwing it at the officer and hitting a car with the radio. He then ran into the gas station, locked himself into the bathroom to escape from police. Police forcibly entered tha bathroom and dragged him out, claiming that he grabbed wine bottles and threw them at police. Police grabbed him and forced him face-down into the prone position, handcuffing him, then realized he was not breathing. Police administered Narcan but Dorado died.

His autopsy revealed “prone restraint cardiac arrest following exertional apprehension of agitated individual, complicated by methamphetamine toxicity, blunt head trauma, and coronary artery disease.” The primary reason given why he died per medical examiner is being forced in the prone position. Being placed face-down during arrest and left in this position for some time commonly causes death by airway compromise. The exertion was likewise a result of the fight with police, as was the head trauma. While he also had some coronary artery disease and methamphetamine in his system, these are merely contributing factors but not primary reasons for his death which are listed as asphyxiation due to the position he was in during arrest.

His family was awarded $3.75 million for this death pending approval of the funds by Atlanta City Council.
