Open Records Summary :
St. Louis police chased a teenager at high speed into a crash with a minivan, killing 5 of 7 family members. Some controversy ensued because the vehicle had been driving 82 mph when police placed spike strips and 29 seconds after hitting the spike strips, the teenager lost control over the allegedly stolen Jeep and crashed. The dead include mom Angelique Simmons, her daughter Rhonda Simmons, two uncles Luther Simmons, and 11-year-old niece Takara Thompson. Two other children were critically hurt in the police chase crash also.
In response to this crash, the St. Louis city and county chapters of the NAACP want to talk with local police chiefs. The NAACP says data collected on police pursuits makes a strong case for opting not to pursue vehicles. They’re calling it a “public safety emergency.”
