Leein Hinkley allegedly broke into a home. When police arrived, the house was on fire and Hinkley fled to a nearby rooftop. Police snipers shot and killed him. Brian Woodbury died in the same event. It is unknown whether he was killed by police or died from some other cause. his body was found in the completely burned house after the standoff.

Yerkoy Shuler was visiting Winston-Salem because his daughter was graduating. Police traffic-stopped him and for unknown reasons asked him to step out of the car. He complied but police claim he tried to reach for something in his car. Police then subdued and handcuffed him and placed him in the back of a police car. He died in the police car from so far unknown causes. Police referred to his death being caused by a “medical episode.” Autopsy results were not made available by police so far.

The chase ended up going head-on against traffic with police trying an apparent PIT maneuver, placing spike strips and chasing the car until it crashed head-on into another vehicle. One person was killed. The driver was injured as were 3 other people. It is unclear whether the deceased was a passenger or bystander but they were not the fleeing driver.
