Montezuma County deputies were sent to a welfare check for John Thompson and his elderly mother. When deputies arrived, he was cooperative and police left. The next morning, the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office reported that he had pointed a rifle at someone. Montezuma deputies returned, found him with a rifle and shot and killed him.
