State : North Carolina

Event : Cognitively impaired man killed by police after confused wandering into neighboring home

Open records summary :

Greene County deputies allege that Willie Lovett arrived and broke into a home and fought deputies and they had to shoot and kill him.

His son explained that his father had dementia, was a gentle person but that he had apparently wandered into a house that looked much like his own one street over when he was confronted and killed by police who mistook him for a burglar.

The family is in a very stressful situation. Only 49 days ago, 2 close family members were killed in a car accident and weeks later, they lost their harmless father and uncle with some neurocognitive disabilities to an officer who fired lethal shots without assessing the situation.

The family has linked photos of Lovett’s home and the home where he was shot and they are linked in the Source Links below. The homes look nearly identical and it is easy to see that a man with dementia would wander in and get confused. So far, no bodycam can be located. It is unknown how much time lapsed from police first seeing him to firing fatal shots. Police have also not composed any allegations about him having been armed or why they perceived him as a threat. This page will be updated when more information is released. The family can be reached for direct support at the linked FB page of Jakel Lovett below.
