OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
| The DeKalb County community corrections office in Fort Wayne, notified police that Gawon Benson had not returned to their custody, as expected. Police believed that he was armed and located in an apartment. Police approached the location on West Campus Drive on the University of Purdue-Fort Wayne campus, but he allegedly did not comply with their commands. Police alleged that he was armed. They shot and killed him. The NAACP has demanded body cams and further evidence. The NAACP also stated that Benson was not a violent or criminal man and had been under house arrest for traffic violations. It is unclear what makes up lead to him being labeled a dangerous man. Body cam video will also be needed to investigate police claims whether he had or even pointed a gun. |
