OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 01/06/2026, Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office deputies attempted to stop a white van after receiving 911 reports that its occupants had been driving recklessly and that one occupant had pointed a handgun at another motorist. The callers reported that two Black men were inside the van. Deputies instead pursued a white van driven by 34-year-old John Andrew Jenuwine, a White U.S. Navy veteran who was alone in the vehicle. The pursuit lasted approximately 32 minutes through Ypsilanti Township. According to investigators, the van stopped several times before continuing to drive away. Deputies ultimately used a PIT maneuver, causing the van to overturn onto its side. As deputies approached the overturned van, one deputy shouted that the driver had a gun. Four deputies then fired 27 rounds into the vehicle, striking Jenuwine seven times. No firearm was recovered from the van. Jenuwine died at the scene. His family later filed a federal wrongful-death lawsuit alleging deputies pursued the wrong vehicle, used excessive force, failed to recognize that Jenuwine did not match the description provided by 911 callers, and failed to render timely medical aid after the shooting. The Michigan State Police completed its investigation and forwarded the case to the Michigan Attorney General for review. As of June 2026, the Attorney General's review remained pending while the civil lawsuit proceeded.
