Event : Driver killed by police chase crash
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 02/03/2026 at approximately 2:30 a.m., deputies from the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by Syracuse Police, attempted to stop a reported stolen minivan in Syracuse. The driver did not comply and fled in the vehicle onto West Genesee Street and then eastbound on Erie Boulevard West. While deputies were pursuing at a distance, the driver failed to negotiate a curve near the 1000 block of Erie Boulevard West and collided with a telephone pole. The male driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger was ejected and transported to Upstate University Hospital with minor injuries. The investigation was turned over to the New York State Attorney General’s Office per protocol for any fatality during a law enforcement encounter. It remains unclear whether weapons or other contraband were present in the vehicle.
