OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 02/03/2026, Marion Police Department officers responded to a welfare check at a residence in the 2900 block of Smiley Drive. Officers encountered 18-year-old Saber Bernard holding a machete. Police said officers gave repeated commands for him to drop the machete. Officers deployed a Taser, which did not stop him. Police then fired their weapons, striking Bernard. Paramedics transported him to a hospital, where he died from gunshot wounds. Authorities reported that Bernard had a machete and did not report recovery of a firearm. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is handling the investigation. Body camera footage had not been released in the initial reporting.
