OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 02/04/2026, Albuquerque Police Department officers engaged in a prolonged standoff with 51-year-old Roman Kirby along Interstate 40 near Eubank Boulevard after multiple calls about reckless driving and a man armed with a firearm. Police located Kirby outside his vehicle and attempted crisis negotiation for approximately six hours, making numerous phone contact attempts. During the standoff, officers deployed a police drone, and police said Kirby fired at the drone and pointed his firearm toward officers on multiple occasions. After Kirby failed to comply with commands to disarm and continued threatening officers, at least one APD officer fired their weapon, striking and killing Kirby at the scene. The interstate was closed for an extended period to protect public safety while negotiations and tactical operations occurred. Bernalillo County authorities continue reviewing the deadly use of force.
