On February 3, 2026, Lexington Police Department officers attempted a traffic stop near the intersection of Alumni Drive and Yellowstone Parkway after receiving a license plate reader alert for a vehicle linked to Brooks Janzen Plemmons, who had active felony warrants from Forsyth County, North Carolina, including first-degree kidnapping, assault by strangulation, and other charges. During the attempted stop, three LPD officers discharged their department-issued firearms, striking Plemmons. A firearm was recovered near him at the scene. Plemmons was transported by Emergency Care to Albert B. Chandler Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He later died on February 6, 2026, at UK Medical Center, according to the Fayette County Coroner’s Office. The Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the officer-involved shooting, and the involved officers have been placed on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the investigation.
