On 02/08/2026, Granite County deputies responded after receiving reports that a man threatened patrons at the Sunshine Station. Deputies located the individual and a pursuit occurred before the encounter continued on Highway 1 near Philipsburg. Deputies fired their weapons during the confrontation, killing the man. Authorities closed portions of the highway and the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation assumed control of the shooting investigation.
