On 02/08/2026, Steven Pence, a 74 year old retired Oklahoma County lieutenant, was shot and killed by law enforcement in rural Lincoln County near Wellston after officers responded to a 911 call reporting a suicidal individual with a firearm. His wife reported he had placed a gun to his head while a nine year old grandchild was inside the home. Deputies and troopers engaged him in the backyard during a prolonged exchange before deploying less lethal rounds. Authorities reported the confrontation escalated and officers opened fire, killing Pence at the scene. The response involved one county deputy and two state troopers. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol assumed investigative leadership and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation responded to the scene while involved officers were placed on administrative leave.
