On 02/03/2026, Sebring Police Department officers and EMS responded to a welfare check on Oregon Avenue after a 911 caller reported concern about his wife’s behavior. Officers entered the residence and encountered a woman who resisted and assaulted first responders. During the encounter, she ignited an officer’s hair with a lighter and had to be restrained. While officers were managing that situation, her husband left the immediate area inside the residence. Authorities later located him suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. EMS transported him to a hospital, where he later died. Law enforcement reported that officers did not discharge their weapons. The incident remains under review by appropriate authorities.
