On 03/24/2026, Des Moines Police Department officers responded to a welfare check in the 7100 block of SE 5th Street after a family member requested assistance during a possible domestic situation. Officers encountered Zakar Jeffrey inside the residence. Police reported he had a knife and moved toward another person, then moved toward officers. An officer fired, striking him. He was pronounced dead. A second person was found dead inside the residence. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.
