On 04/21/2026, Torrance County deputies responded to a disturbance near New Mexico Highway 131 and Highway 55 in Manzano involving Edward Lopez. Deputies said Lopez fired shots at them during the encounter, prompting a shelter in place order for nearby residents. New Mexico State Police responded to assist. Authorities said Lopez continued firing during a prolonged standoff and officers returned fire, striking and killing him. Police later recovered multiple firearms from the property. The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is leading the investigation.
