On 03/22/2026, a trooper with the Virginia State Police attempted to stop a vehicle for reckless driving on Interstate 64 eastbound near the Fort Eustis exit in York County. Police said Timothy Caplinger was traveling 99 miles per hour in a 65 mile per hour zone. Police said the driver did not stop and troopers escalated a chase. During the pursuit, the vehicle exited onto Route 17 and traveled southbound toward Yorktown. As the vehicle approached the intersection of Route 17 and Ella Taylor Road, the vehicle left the roadway, struck a curb, crashed into a tree, and caught fire. Troopers removed the driver from the vehicle, but the driver died from injuries sustained in the crash. Authorities did not publicly release the driver’s identity in the initial reporting.
