On 04/24/2026, a trooper with the Wisconsin State Patrol initiated a traffic stop for an equipment violation on U.S. Highway 51 north of County Road A near Tomahawk. Police said the driver, later identified as 36 year old Wade B. Johnson of Minocqua, initially stopped but then drove away as the trooper approached the vehicle. Authorities said Johnson traveled about a quarter mile before his vehicle entered a ditch and came to a stop. During the incident, Johnson suffered an apparent self inflicted fatal injury and died before deputies reached the vehicle. Deputies with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Tomahawk Police Department, and Wisconsin State Patrol responded to the incident.
