OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/20/2026, shortly before noon, North Las Vegas Police Department officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a shirtless man firing an AR-15-style rifle in the 6000 block of Yellowhammer Place near Decatur Boulevard and the 215 Beltway. Callers reported the man fired into the air, toward occupied homes, and toward vehicles while walking through the neighborhood. Investigators later recovered approximately 20 spent cartridge casings, and multiple homes and vehicles had been struck by gunfire.
When officers arrived, they found Shane Hansen lying in the street. Officers repeatedly ordered him to remain on the ground, but he stood up and resisted attempts to take him into custody. During the struggle, police said Hansen grabbed an officer's slung patrol rifle and refused repeated commands to let go. Officers deployed a Taser multiple times and used a baton to gain control of his arms before handcuffing him. No officer discharged a firearm during the incident. One officer suffered a hand injury during the struggle and was treated at a hospital.
After Hansen was restrained, officers observed that he was bleeding from the head. They rolled him onto his side, requested emergency medical personnel to expedite their response, administered Narcan, and began lifesaving measures after he became unresponsive. He was transported to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 1:00 p.m. His cause and manner of death remain under investigation by the Clark County Coroner's Office.
On July 23, 2026, North Las Vegas Police released a Critical Incident Briefing containing 911 recordings, body-worn camera footage, surveillance video, and additional details of the encounter. The department stated the investigation remains ongoing and that additional information will be released when it can be disclosed without compromising the investigation.
