OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 06/26/2026 at approximately 7:30 p.m., Broomfield Police Department officers responded to a residence in the 13200 block of Grove Way after family members reported that Morris Selden, 45, was experiencing a mental health crisis and was armed with a knife. Family members told responding officers they wanted Selden taken into protective custody and repeatedly urged officers not to shoot him.
Officers contacted Selden outside the residence and attempted to negotiate with him for several minutes. Police reported that Selden remained armed with a knife and moved toward officers. An officer fired, striking Selden. Officers rendered emergency medical aid until paramedics arrived, but Selden died at the scene.
The 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team assumed responsibility for the criminal investigation. Broomfield Police later released body-worn camera footage of the encounter. Following the release, Selden's neighbors and community members held a public gathering calling for greater transparency and accountability, stating that officers should have continued de-escalation efforts because the incident involved a mental health crisis.
As of the latest publicly available reporting, authorities had not publicly identified the officer who fired the fatal shots.
