OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 06/10/2026, Lloyd Gilmore went to the Sikeston Police Department seeking help during a mental health crisis after asking his daughter to call police. According to a police report, officers attempted to detain Gilmore after an encounter outside the police station escalated into a physical struggle. Police used a Taser, placed Gilmore in hobble restraints, and emergency medical personnel administered a sedative before transporting him to a hospital. Gilmore died shortly afterward. As of late July 2026, authorities had not released a final cause of death because toxicology testing remained pending and two autopsies had been performed. The Missouri State Highway Patrol investigated the death and planned to submit its findings to the Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney. Gilmore's death prompted protests and community meetings, with family members and local residents questioning the officers' actions and calling for greater transparency. Gilmore's daughter stated that he had gone to the police station because he believed it would be a safe place to seek assistance during his mental health crisis.
