On 05/14/2026, law enforcement officers responded to 410 North Osborne Avenue in Gillette, Wyoming, after receiving reports that former Gillette Police Department Corporal Thomas Prather was threatening to harm himself and others. As officers responded, additional reports indicated that shots had been fired. A standoff developed and continued overnight while officers attempted to resolve the situation. Prather was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities stated that no officers fired their weapons during the incident. Campbell County Coroner Paul Wallem identified the deceased as Thomas Prather, a former Gillette Police Department corporal who had served with the department from April 2021 until leaving the agency in January 2026. The investigation was conducted by the Campbell County Sheriff's Office and the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation.
