OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 06/19/2026, a New Madrid County Sheriff's Office deputy attempted to stop a vehicle after receiving reports of a reckless driver. The driver continued driving while deputies pursued him at high speed through New Madrid County. The pursuit ended when the vehicle crashed on Sterling Road near County Highway 428. Deputies approached the crashed vehicle and found the driver suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy later determined that the driver died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound sustained during the pursuit. The Missouri State Highway Patrol investigated the pursuit, and the sheriff's office stated that no deputy fired a weapon.
