On 08/22/2026 at approximately 12:50 p.m., an unidentified man in his mid-40s was shot and killed by a Santa Monica Police Department officer in Palisades Park near the 1400 block of Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, California.

Santa Monica police officers had responded to the park after a reported domestic violence incident. While officers were interviewing witnesses, police said a man who was not involved in the original domestic violence call approached them carrying a knife.

Police Chief Darrick Jacob alleged that the man ignored repeated commands to drop the knife and continued advancin.g toward officers. Police alleged that he moved toward the officers with the knife before one officer fired, striking him. A knife was recovered at the scene. Jacob described it as a large knife.

Santa Monica police and fire personnel provided emergency medical treatment. The man was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 1:49 p.m.

Police said the man appeared to be in his mid-40s. NBC Los Angeles reported that authorities said there were indications h.e may have been homeless, although that has not been independently confirmed. His identity had not been released pending formal identification and notification of relatives.
