On February 17, 2025, at approximately 10:48 p.m., a Pierce County deputy observed a Tesla traveling eastbound on 128th Street East in Puyallup at speeds exceeding 100 mph. The deputy initiated a pursuit without activating lights and sirens but soon lost sight of the vehicle. Shortly thereafter, the deputy discovered the Tesla had veered off the road, crashed through a fence, struck three large trees, and caught fire in the backyard of a residence in the 7000 block of 128th Street East. Deputies attempted to pull over a red Kawasaki motorcycle driven by 41-year-old Michael Gaffney for speeding in the southbound lanes. Gaffney accelerated away while approximately three minutes later, multiple 911 calls reported a motorcycle crash near 1427 Bayshore Boulevard. Investigators determined that Gaffney lost control of his motorcycle while fleeing and collided with a guy wire attached to a utility pole. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
